Department of American Studies
Founded as an independent Program in American Studies in 1990, the Department of American Studies of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, received academic accreditation as a full-fledged Department in 1994. In 1999 Canadian Studies joined the Department, extending the scope of teaching and research into American Studies. The Department is part of the School of English and American Studies of Eötvös Loránd University. In 2000 the Ph.D. Program in American Studies was launched, training five to ten new doctoral students each year.
Today this Department is a leading force in American Studies in Hungary, with a history of high-level national and international conferences and publications. Founder of the Hungarian Association of American Studies (HAAS) to represent Hungary in the European Association of American Studies (EAAS) as of 1994, the Department is member of the American Studies Network and the American Studies Association of the U.S. The members of the Department have regularly taught at various U.S. and European universities and are frequently involved in international scholarly exchanges and conferences.
Since the founding of the Department, several hundred students have earned a degree in American Studies. Many of our former graduates have entered into academia, the civil and diplomatic service, as well as the political and economic spheres.
