Canadian Studies
Canadian Studies has a history of over 25 years at ELTE: it began in 1979, when Anna Jakabfi offered offered a special seminar in Canadian Literature for the first time among universities in Hungary. Elective course offerings followed in Canadian culture, literature, and history throughout the 80s and 90s. In 2002 ELTE’s Canadian Studies Centre was established.
Today two permanent faculty members, Vera Benczik (SEAS DAS) and János Kenyeres (SEAS DES) offer courses in Canadian Studies, while over the years, several visiting professors taught courses on various aspects of Canadian civilization.
The Canadiana collection of the SEAS Library, with ca. 2,000 books and magazines, serves teaching primarily. Over the years we have received some dozen book donations from the Canadian government, The Toronto Star, DESCANT magazine, the Writers’ Union of Canada, and from individual visiting professors.
