PhD in American Studies

This program is part of the Doctoral School of Literary Studies, accredited at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. Over the past several decades, American Studies came to be internationally recognized as a multidisciplinary field focusing on the complex issues of American culture and civilization. Considering the international influence of the U.S. as a political power and the influence of American culture worldwide, it is especially important to study the almost four hundred years of American literature, language, history, and culture. Furthermore, recent developments in, and the growing intellectual influence of, American literary and cultural theories demand scholars to be able to understand and reflect on this field. These developments are partly the result of the clashes between traditional literary theory and multi- or interdisciplinary American Studies. The doctoral program provides suitable background information and study opportunities to acquire a complex model of U.S. culture and society. Our main aim is to equip our doctoral students with the required skills to be able to do independent, creative academic work on an international level in the various disciplines of American Studies, as well as become the pool for the future of college-level American Studies.
